Current situation as of 8 May
On 22 April, 2025, a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, including tourists. The attack was claimed by the Kashmir-based “The Resistance Front” with alleged ties to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). India responded with Operation Sindoor, conducting air strikes against nine targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, including unprecedented strikes in Punjab province, the heartland of Pakistan’s military. India has also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a move not undertaken even during previous conflicts, which puts Pakistan’s water supply at risk.
Pakistan has denied involvement in the initial attack but has since escalated by initiating artillery exchanges along the ‘Line of Control’ that separates Indian and Pakistan administered Kashmir. Pakistan also claims to have downed five Indian aircraft and twenty-nine drones, although this cannot currently be verified. Most recently, on 8th May, Pakistan also launched drone strikes against targets in the Jammu region.
