What's inside?

  • Elections: This year more than half of the world’s population will head to the polls to vote in over 40 national elections that will likely shape the geopolitical consensus for the decade ahead.
  • Cyber Risk: 2024 will continue to test the mettle of IT and cyber security professionals across the globe.
  • War Risk: Armed conflicts of varying severity are likely to be pervasive in 2024.
  • Terrorism: Could Europe become a focal point for terror attacks in the coming year?
  • Civil Unrest: We expect significant instances of civil unrest to continue around the globe in the coming year.
  • Future Crime: Threats related to cryptocurrency, AI exploitation, and the use of deepfakes in social engineering are expected to grow in sophistication.
  • ESG Regulations: Across the world, new regulatory regimes are either being proposed or taking effect.

2023 was yet another tumultuous year.

The ongoing war in Ukraine, the escalating conflict between Israel, Hamas, and other proxies in the Middle East, and further flashpoints across Africa, the Indo-Pacific and South Caucasus point to a geopolitical ecosystem permanently in flux. Elsewhere, threats to global trade and supply chains, and the evolving threat posed by cyber threat actors and climate change, present eminent and systemic challenges to governments and businesses of all shapes and sizes.

Will 2024 be any different?

In our new series – Sightlines – we share our insights into what will likely shape the geopolitical and global risk landscape in the coming year(s) ahead. In this report, we consider some of the key challenges we expect to encounter in 2024.
