UK summer crime review 2020

The past few months have seen major fluctuations in UK crime rates. Fraud and violent crime, in particular, have experienced sudden and prolonged surges in response to the current situation. But what does that mean for people living and working in the UK?

To answer that question, AnotherDay’s investigations team has created a comprehensive review that delves deeper into key crime statistics and trends from the past summer. You will also find information on the time, place, and details of the events in question, to help you put our findings into context.

From terrorism to organised crime, we protect organisations and high net worth individuals against today’s biggest threats. Get in touch to learn more.

The impact of COVID-19 on national crime statistics

A common theme that emerged from our latest review is the effect COVID-19 has had on crime rates across the country.

Nationwide lockdown triggered a marked increase in various forms of crime over the past 6 months.

One of the clearest examples is corporate fraud. And our research has uncovered two main reasons that help to explain the complex relationship between the rise in fraud and lockdown.

First and foremost, the government’s furlough scheme has left many individuals struggling financially. As a result, some have turned to crime in a desperate bid to make ends meet. At the same time, the widespread move to remote working has made it difficult for employers to supervise staff effectively. For people on reduced hours, or those who have had to take a significant pay cut, fraud may seem like an enticing way of supplementing their income.

One of the key issues is that it is unlikely we will see crime rates return immediately to pre-COVID levels when the pandemic ends. Due to the long-term economic difficulties caused by coronavirus – resulting in a global recession even worse than the 2008 financial crisis – experts predict an increase, rather than a decrease, in various forms of crime.
